About Malaysia Biology Olympiad:
Malaysian Biology Olympiad (MBO) is a Biology competition for students from secondary school to pre-university. The competition is held every year in three series beginning from March until May. The MBO tests on Biology problem and experiment and the official language of MBO is English.
Syllabus:
Consists of two parts:
Theoretical Examination
25% Animal anatomy and physiology
20% Cellular, molecular and microbiology
20% Genetics, population genetics and evolutionary biology
15% Plant anatomy and physiology
10% Ecology
5% Ethology
5% Systematics
Practical (Experimental) Examination
Comparative and Functional Biosystematics
Molecular Cell Biology
Plant Ecology and Physiology
Evolutionary Ethology
Level of Exam:
MBO will be conducted in a number of series. First screening test will be conducted online and it can be access nationwide. Top 100 students nationwide will be selected to participate in the first workshop at Pusat PERMATApintar Negara, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.This will be followed by the second secreening during the workshop. At the end of the five days’ workshop, students will be given an off level biology test. Best 60 candidates will be selected for second workshop. From there, the final number of students to be selected will be six and four will be selected to represent the country in International Biology Olympiad of the year.

Benefits, Awards & Scholarships:
- The final ranking of the students is based upon their equally weighted scores for theory and practical tasks according the t-score method
- The individual papers, tasks and answer sheets of the students will be assessed and marked by the authors of the competition tasks and solutions.
- The National Jury should announce the official results together with awards to individual students.
- The number of medals will be limited:
- gold medals approximately 10 % of the number of participants,
- silver medals approximately 20 % of the number of participants and
- bronze medals approximately 30 % of the number of competitors
- Each competitor will obtain a certificate that recognizes his/her participation in the Malaysian Biology Olympiad.
