About Malaysia Earth Science Olympiad:

Malaysia Earth Science Olympiad (MyESO) is an annual national school-level competition that introduces earth science knowledge to secondary school and pre-university students in Malaysia.

Syllabus:

The syllabus covers 4 main topics that are:

Geography Skills are the skills that students would have been exposed to in the first year of studying Geography. Geography skills may include, but is not limited to, the knowledge of using geographical instruments, calculation in geography, map reading skills and information gathering through field sketching and measuring.

Geoscience Skills are the ability to integrate the study of science; physics, chemistry, biology, including mathematics into geography or what we can refer to as our environment. This integration allows students to manipulate the environment (eg: fossil fuel) into a product of science that can benefit human beings (electricity). However, this skill is not only limited to the environmental concepts only as it also covers the study of astronomy, meteorology, oceanology and hydrology, among others.

Physical Geography is the study that focuses on the processes involved in the shaping of the surface of the earth. This involves the study of the earth’s interaction with the sun, seasons, climate zones, soils, rivers and streams, flora and fauna, natural hazards, the ecosystems and many more. Nature and characteristics of the physical environment, their development and spatial distribution are also included in Physical Geography.

Human & Regional Geography is the study of the spatial distribution of human population in a specific region and the relationships between society and environment. This study may lead to discoveries about the effects of the environment as a result of human population which can be contributed to religion, businesses, city development etc.
