The tenth Sri Lankan Earth Science Olympiad Competition (SLESOC) will be together organized by Geological Society of Sri Lanka along with the Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya. The eligible candidates for this exam are Sri Lankan school students under 19 years by 1st July 2018 & also the students who have passed the sat for G.C.E. (O/L) or the G.C.E. (O/L) examination. This competition is held during March every year.
Subjects offered:
The following are the subjects offered in this Olympiad:
- a) Geosphere b) Hydrosphere c) Biosphere
- d) Atmosphere e) Planetary System f) Geography
Syllabus:
The syllabus for Sri Lankan Earth Science Olympiad is distributed as follows
1) Geosphere (50%) 2) Biosphere (5%) 3) Planetary System (Astronomy) (10%)
4) Atmosphere (10%) 5) Hydrosphere (15%) 6) Geography (10%)
Marking Scheme:
- The exam consists of 3 sections i.e. 1]Multiple Choice Question(MCQ), 2] Short Answer Question,
- The MCQ type marking is (01 Marks X 50 = 50 Marks).
- The Short Answer Question.
Eligibility:
- The eligibility criteria of the Sri Lankan Earth Science Olympiad is the participant must be Sri Lankan school student under 19 years by 1st July 2018 & also who have passed the sat for G.C.E.(O/L) or the G.C.E.(O/L) examination.
Level of Exam:
The exam is of intermediary level for school students studying in Sri Lanka.
Exam Pattern:
- The medium of the exam is English.
- The exam is two hours written exam.
- It consists of 2 sections namely multiple choice questions & short answer questions.
Exam Dates:
Will be announced prior to the exam (Probably in April 2018).
Cut off:
- There is no cut off for this Olympiad.
- Top 4 students will participate in 12th International Earth Science Olympiad.
Registration Process:
- Registration Fee = Rs. 250/-
- Registration Form can be downloaded from gsslweb.org and complete form must be sent by registered post to Co-coordinator/Sri Lankan Earth Science Olympiad Competition, Geology Society of Sri Lanka, Department of Geology and University of Peradeniya. The Registration fees can be paid by following means:
- A cheque drawn in favour of “Geological Society of Sri Lanka”
- A money order drawn in favour of “Geological Society of Sri Lanka”
- At any branch of national Savings Branch (To the Savings Account, no.: 1-0015-01-04396, Name: Geological Society of Sri Lanka, Branch: Kandy).
- In case of choice c), please attach the copy of bank slip along with this registration form.
- On the exam day, a receipt of application fee will be issued to all applicants.
Benefits:
- This Olympiad deals with the various branches of the earth science. It helps us to test our knowledge deeply in various aspects of the earth science.
- It also gives an experience to compete at national level with nationwide excellent minds.
Awards and Scholarships:
- A medal is awarded to the best student in the competition.
- The other awards include merit certificates which are awarded to the best three students and the provincial level first places of the competition.
- All of the Participants are awarded with the certificate for participation in Sri Lankan Earth Science Olympiad.
